Preparation for MRI scans

Getting ready for an MRI is normally simple. Occasionally, you'll need to fast before the scan. On the day, dress in comfortable clothing free of metal fastenings, including buttons, toggles and zips, and be prepared to swap into a gown if asked. Strong magnets inside the scanner interact with metal. Before the scan, you'll be asked to remove your glasses and jewellery, take off your watch and belt, and hand over your wallet, phone and similar items. Implants such as pacemakers may mean further safety preparation is needed. We give you every instruction in advance. For a contrast scan, please have recent blood test results ready that confirm how your kidneys are doing. Your kidneys filter out the contrast agent, gadolinium, once the scan is over, which is why these results are needed.

The procedure

Trained radiographers perform every scan, and they'll run through the process with you first. You'll be positioned on a flat bed and asked to keep still while it carries you into a doughnut-shaped machine. Depending on which area is being looked at, you could be there anywhere between 15 and 90 minutes. Contrast, when needed, is given by IV. It's a noisy experience. Still, listening to music is usually possible, and the radiographers can talk to you over headphones from start to finish.

How long does it take?

Allow between 15 and 90 minutes for your scan. The number of body areas included, and whether contrast is part of it, will decide where in that range you land. Before your appointment, your clinician and your imaging centre will confirm the expected length.
